A small collection of children’s toys from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.  Some were very simple while others were more technical.  Most toys were handmade.

As you enter the Patrick County branch of the Virginia Library, we are to the left.  We are not a part of the library, we are maintained by the Patrick County Historical Society.  We have one curator, Eunice Kirkman, who is on scene three days a week. The other 2 days are covered by volunteers.  You’ll find all to be dedicated to the county’s history and very helpful.

Fashions of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.  These dresses would likely fit a 12 year old child now.

Looms, spinning wheels, and sewing needles, were the essentials of every home.

The lady of the house made most of the clothing for the family.  Local stores carried simple items, or they could order items from the mail order houses of that day.

Fine china was enjoyed by only a few.  This case holds cups from several countries.

The section holds musical instruments that were a big part of life in days gone by.  The organ was owned by John & Jeanette Baliles, great grandparents of former    Governor Gerald Baliles, donated by his      great uncle, Moir Baliles.
