Text Box: 19th Century Organ

This lovely organ was recently donated by Moir Baliles of
Stuart. It was owned by his mother, Mary Jeanette Morrison
Baliles. Hanging above the organ are portraits of Mary and
  her husband, John Henry Baliles.

The couple’s descendants have contributed much to Virginia
and the nation as Law Enforcement officers. Moir Garland
Baliles retired from the Police Force of Washington, DC.
Larry Baliles retired from the Patrick County Sheriffs
Department, as did many of his cousins over the years.
Our former Governor, Gerald Baliles, is the great grandson of
   John and Mary.

The Baliles lived in the Buffalo Ridge Section of the county.
Traveling toward Woolwine on Route 8, as one turns off on Route
57, the roof of their house is visible on top of the mountain to the
   right.

Almost completely isolated now, the old county road once
wound through the mountains by the house. In 1902, a new road
was built bypassing many families in the Buffalo Ridge Section
   of the county.

The organ will remain on display in the Patrick County
Historical Museum, in agreement with descendants that it is not
   ever to leave Patrick County.
